This Morning guest’s stuffed dead dog helped him find love in lockdown

A This Morning guest has revealed he’s been lucky in love in lockdown thanks to his dead dog.

Mitch Byers, who first appeared on the show in 2018 to chat about stuffing his deceased pet Phoebe, revealed that he struck gold on a dating app and it was all down to the dead dog.

He explained to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that he met his girlfriend Jamie after sharing a photo of Phoebe on his profile.

Jamie recalled: ‘At first I wasn’t sure if it was a dead dog or an alive dog, she was cute either way.’

When she realised Phoebe was stuffed, she explained: ‘I thought it was hilarious, it definitely made Mitch stand out.’

Jamie reasoned that, in lockdown, you have to be picky about who you spend your time with and date, and Phoebe ensured that Mitch ‘made the cut.’

The couple also revealed that they take Phoebe on walks with Jamie’s (alive) dog, named Nanook, with the pair insisting: ‘Anytime they’re together, it’s fully supervised to make sure no funny business happens.’

‘Phoebe doesn’t need to die twice,’ Jamie reflected.

Thinking back to when Phoebe was first stuffed, Mitch revealed that his mum put her on a table when he got home after an aeroplane flight to surprise him – and he found it hilarious.

He admitted he’s had ‘mixed reactions’ from people, but clearly it’s worked out well for him and Jamie!

‘Some people thought it was cruel, most people, because it’s Portland, thought it was hysterical. It’s always a mixed bag especially in social dating when you advertise a taxidermy dog with you,’ he explained.

As for whether Jamie’s going to get Nanook stuffed when he dies, she’s currently ’50/50′ about it.

‘You’ll need a big freezer!’ Holly told her.

After getting Phoebe stuffed, Mitch created an Instagram page titled My Dead Dog and Me, which now has a following of more than 6,000.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
