The ITV hosts have been forced to distance themselves while filming the series every morning, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, after government guidelines relaxed, the pair were informed that they could shuffle closer to one another for the first time in months.
Speaking to viewers today, Phil said: ‘Very lovely when the director actually says, “Actually, you could sit a little closer to each other”.
‘Rather than normally, “You’re too close, you’re too close!” This is better.’
‘It is better,’ Holly agreed. ‘I can’t even remember whether we sat closer because this feels right.’
‘It does feel right. I mean I’m not sure I want to be much closer,’ Phil laughed as his co-star jokingly branded him ‘rude’.
Some were a little baffled by why they had decided to maintain social distancing rules when all restrictions had ended.
One penned on Twitter: ‘If we are allowed to socialise outside work without distancing then why is it still required in the workplace? #ThisMorning.’
But another suggested that this may be rules set by ITV bosses themselves.
Holly and Phil finally returned to our screens on Monday after a summer break – which saw Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford take over their positions.
While the guidelines have been relaxed around the country, they stated that they will be keeping up some of their social distancing rules, but lowering the two-metre rule.
Waving around a one-metre stick, Holly cheered: ‘Goodbye the two-metre stick and hello to the one-metre stick.
‘Oh my gosh, we are so close yet still so far.’
‘We’re just randomly making up rules here, but it seemed like a good idea,’ her co-star added.
This Morning continues on weekdays, at 10am, on ITV.
