Joe Exotic’s legal team could look to appeal his prison sentence since he was denied a pardon from former president Donald Trump.
The Tiger King star, who is serving 22 years behind bars for animal abuse and the murder for hire plot against rival Carole Baskin, wasn’t granted clemency by Trump last week – even though he had a limo waiting for him.
Although Exotic has already reached out to Joe Biden for a pardon, a lawyer has explained that he might have better luck in requesting to have years taken off his sentence.
‘His legal team are unlikely to appeal the animal abuse charges,’ John Szepietowski of Audley Chaucer Solicitors told Metro.co.uk.
‘They are well documented and he doesn’t seem to be denying them, hence he was counting on a pardon.’
He continued: ‘They may have new evidence from the recorded phone calls, but that’s just for the murder-for-hire charge and it is unknown how useful those recordings actually are.
‘The lawyers however might be able to appeal on quantum of sentence, i.e. to the actual prison term in order to reduce it on the basis that it is excessive.’
On whether Exotic will have any luck being pardoned by president Biden, Szepietowski added: ‘The new President Joe Biden may pardon Mr Exotic, although it is unlikely to be at the forefront of his attentions.
‘President Biden is also an animal lover: The first pups, Major and Champ, are to join the first family in the White House.
‘Three-year-old Major is also the first presidential rescue pet, having been adopted from an animal shelter in 2018 and whose acceptance into the White House was a Zoom event.
‘President Biden, therefore, is unlikely to pardon a man who made a living from encaging wild animals, selling them illegally and killing five tigers.’
Tiger King is available to stream on Netflix.
