Tiger King’s Carole Baskin is still living in fear for her life despite breathing a sigh of relief that Joe Exotic has been denied his request for a pardon from Donald Trump.
Exotic, real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage, was hoping to be granted clemency from his 22-year sentence for animal abuse and the murder for hire plot of his rival Baskin.
The former zookeeper’s team were so confident he would be freed that they even had a limo waiting for him close to his prison in Texas.
Metro.co.uk exclusively caught up with Baskin to hear her response to the failed pardon mission – and despite being pleased by the outcome, she remains worried.
‘It’s such an absolute sense of relief because it’s not just been waiting yesterday and today, it’s been from the day he was sentenced that we have been concerned that he could receive a presidential pardon,’ Baskin told us.
‘I think, what you think about you bring about, so I’ve tried very hard not to think about him getting a pardon and yet every five minutes someone from the media is like, “what do you think about him getting a pardon?”,’ she continued.
‘It makes it really, really difficult so I’m glad it’s finally come to an end.’
Baskin still lives in fear for her safety, however, due to the other players in the illegal tiger trade.
‘I feel safer from Joe but I don’t feel safe in general though,’ she said.
‘He can still finish what he set out to do and he’s got less of a reason not to do it now he’s already in jail.’
‘The people who want me dead in this industry are still out there and are so much smarter than Joe was and so much more dangerous that there is never going to be a feeling of being safe until this entire industry is completely done.’
Tiger King is available to stream on Netflix.
