Tom Holland has said that he would be taking a long hiatus from acting after his next series ‘broke’ him.
The Crowded Room is a 10-part psychological thriller partially based on Billy Milligan’s 1979 arrest and Daniel Keyes’ following non-fiction book on his crimes.
Spider-Man actor Tom, 27, also worked as producer in addition to acting in the series, but confessed that taking on such a demanding position was challenging.
He said: ‘I love the learning curve of becoming a producer. I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve always sort of lived by this idea that hard work is good work.
‘I really enjoyed it, but then again, the show did break me. There did come a time where I was sort of like, “I need to have a break,” I disappeared.’
Speaking about his future plans, he told Extra: ‘I went to Mexico for a week and had some time on a beach. And I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was.’
The Cherry star previously admitted working on the show took a huge toll on his mental health in ways he’s never experienced before.
He said: ‘I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job doing the whole action-movie thing.
‘But the mental aspect, it really beat me up and it took a long time for me to recover afterwards, to sort of get back to reality.’
According to Variety, Tom’s character is vaguely based on Billy, who was arrested for the rape of three women in 1979.
Before the trial, he was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, which contributed to his attorneys successfully arguing insanity.
The official synopsis reads: ‘The Crowded Room follows Danny Sullivan, a man who is arrested following his involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979.
‘A captivating thriller told through a series of interviews with curious interrogator Rya Goodwin, Danny’s life story unfolds, revealing elements of the mysterious past that shaped him, and the twists and turns that will lead him to a life-altering revelation.’
The Crowded Room will premiere on June 9 on Apple TV+.
