Tracy Beaker star Dani Harmer has spoken about her experience on Strictly Come Dancing, saying that she was fat shamed on social media at the time.
The actress took part in the 2012 series of the show and was targeted by trolls for being ‘overweight’, despite the fact she was a size six.
Speaking to the Radio Times, Dani said: ‘I got so many messages, people telling me that I’m fat, that I’m overweight and I was like a size six at the time, so I was like, “Holy moly, if I’m fat, God knows what other people must be thinking if they’re bigger than me”, that must be just horrible.’
Talking about rationalising the negativity, Tracey said: ‘I can think of things really logically and be like, obviously, I’m not fat, that’s ridiculous.
‘[I thought] this person, obviously, is just bored, or has something wrong with their life that they feel like this is the only way they can get some validation and I actually feel sorry for them.’
The actress added: ‘So I can kind of put it logically, I guess. But yeah, for kids it must be so hard.’
Dani was partnered with Vincent Simone on the 10th series of Strictly and finished in fourth place, making the final with fellow stars Denise Van Outen, Kimberley Walsh and eventual winner Louis Smith.
Meanwhile, Dani is returning as Tracy Beaker in My Mum, Tracy Beaker, as the character becomes a mother.
The upcoming three special episodes marks the 30th anniversary of Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker books, following her as she looks after daughter Jess (Emma Maggie Davies). Frenemies like Justine Littlewood (Montanna Thompson) are also back to help tell the story.
Speaking about what’s to come, actress Dani teased: ‘The audience will be very pleased to know that Justine Littlewood is coming back. So obviously that’s not going to go well.’
