Trigger Point: Even Vicky McClure couldn’t cope with the end of episode 1

Trigger Point star Vicky McClure echoed the voice of the nation as she checked in with fans after the tense first episode of the new ITV drama.

The Line Of Duty actress takes centre stage in the series, which follows bomb disposal experts at the front of urgent efforts when a terrorist campaign threatens the capital over the summer.

The closing scene from the first chapter had Vicky and viewers ‘jumping out of their seats’ as her character Lana and colleague Joel (Adrian Lester) found themselves at risk of accidentally detonating bombs on more than one occasion.

However, it was a short-lived adventure for Joel, who was blown up by an explosive after noticing a bomb hidden in a nearby van.

After the credits rolled, Vicky took to Twitter to address the tension.

‘How we doing?! 😲,’ she penned. ‘(Even I jumped!!)’

Viewers responded by sharing they were on tenterhooks for the instalment, with one writing: ‘I was on the edge of my seat, can’t wait for next week’s episode.’

Echoing a similar sentiment, another added: ‘Shouted “woah” and jumped despite knowing that the entire premise of the show suggested that this would happen.’

A third said: ‘You sensed something was going to happen but when it did…wow, that was intense.’

Trigger Point episode two is set to air on Sunday, January 30 with the synopsis teasing: ‘During a blistering heatwave, London is still reeling from the events at Westhaven. Inter-community tensions rise as the Far-Right group English Flag and their leader Agatha Jack take to the streets to blame Islamists for the attack.

‘The government raises the terror threat to critical, and across the capital people are on edge, seeing potential devices everywhere.

‘At New Scotland Yard, Counter Terrorism detectives are under increasing pressure to find those responsible for the attack before the situation spirals out of control.

‘Expo units are in constant action dealing with call-outs. Lana is promoted to Team Leader, and her professional duties allow her no time to hold back.’

The synopsis continues: ‘CCTV footage of a suspicious vehicle leaving Westhaven leads the team to a warehouse on the edge of London, where they uncover bomb-making materials and evidence that seems to confirm that the bombers were Islamist.

‘But the discovery of what appears to be military equipment and high-grade explosives on site makes Lana question the real identity of the bombers, and a further device left in a sensitive and provocative location seems to confirm her suspicions.’

We’re looking forward to this one.

Trigger Point continues on Sunday at 9pm on ITV.
