Trigger Point: Is it linked to Line Of Duty?

New ITV drama Trigger Point kicks off on ITV tonight thus beginning our Sunday night obsession.

The six-part series starring Vicky McClure and Adrian Lester follows bomb disposal experts at the front of urgent efforts when a terrorist campaign threatens the capital over the summer.

Line Of Duty star McClure plays front line officer Lana Washington, who is an experienced bomb disposal operative, known as an ‘Expo’, and Trauma’s Lester takes on the role of plays Joel Nutkins, who works alongside her.

Episode one starts in the middle of a summer heatwave when Expo officers Lana and Joel are called out to a Metropolitan Police counterterrorism operation at a London housing estate to investigate a potential bomb factory and a suspected bomb maker, Andy Phelan.

Is Trigger Point linked to Line Of Duty?

Line Of Duty showrunner Jed Mercurio serves as an executive producer on Trigger Point alongside Jimmy Mulville, Mark Redhead, and Jessica Sharkey, with Julia Stannard producing.

There are no links between the two shows, other than Mercurio and McClure’s involvement.

McClure, who plays DI Kate Fleming in Line Of Duty, stressed that she isn’t worried about fans potentially comparing the new ITV drama with the hit BBC series.

‘I’m not concerned in so much as this is what actors do,’ she said. ‘I have fallen into this genre and Line of Duty… we never expected it to do what it’s done.

‘I can’t be worried about taking roles that might feel in a similar world or in a similar vein because of that.’

She continued: ‘I look at Lana and Kate and I don’t see them together as the same people at all.

‘Not only with the way that Lana looks and the way we have designed that, her personality is very different.’

Mercurio has already teased that Trigger Point could return for more episodes following series one.

‘If this series goes down well with the audience, we’d love to do more,’ he told press. ‘It’s set up to be a returner.

‘We know how much audiences love thrillers – they’re a big part of people’s TV experience now, and having another series of Trigger Point in the future would be great if we’re lucky enough to get to that point.’

Trigger Point airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
