TV host repeatedly shut down trying to get Venus Williams interview on Oscars red carpet and viewers can’t handle the cringe

Channel 7 viewers were left cringing at a presenter’s Oscars red carpet coverage after she was snubbed by Venus Williams for an interview.

Natalie Barr was in Hollywood for her first-ever Academy Awards and unwittingly provided non-stop entertainment as she attempted to wave down the tennis star for a chat.

What Natalie didn’t initially realise though, was that she was incorrectly calling out Venus’s sister’s name Serena.

‘Serena, Serena!’ she was heard half-heartedly shouting, prompting The Morning Show’s Kylie Gillies to point out: ‘That’s Venus.’

Natalie then turned to look at the camera and flashed a frustrated glance.

‘Venus, hi, Australian TV,’ she tried again. ‘Venus, we love tennis.’

The presenter was then seen reaching down to the floor where she grabbed some Tim Tams in a bid to entice the sportswoman over.

‘Would you like a Tim Tam?’ she cried out. ‘It’s an Australian delicacy.’

At this point, it looked like Natalie’s efforts were about to be rewarded as Venus turned around, however, it quickly transpired that she had been called over by Entertainment Tonight who was stood next to her.

‘One thing I’m learning as an Oscars red carpet first timer is that some people stop for you, some people really couldn’t care less, so I’m riding off the coat-tails of … shall we say two more experienced people,’ The Sunrise host later told the programme.

‘We’ve got ET one side and Access Hollywood the other side. These guys know what they’re doing.

‘I’m basically just stealing all the people who stop for them. I just sort of butt-in. Sometimes it works, sometimes it fails dismally.’

It’s fair to say viewers were a little pained by Natalie’s attempts, with one writing: ‘Anyone watching the Oscars today on Channel 7? The way that Aussie reporter was rejected by one of the Williams sisters was just cringe to watch. Tim Tam’s did not even help.’

Echoing a similar sentiment, another wrote: ‘Watching the live coverage of the Oscars on Channel 7 and it’s so embarrassing.’

While Natalie struggled to get the Williams sister to chat, she did manage to interview the likes of Nicole Kidman, Tiffany Haddish, Billie Eilish, Kirsten Dunst, Kevin Costner and Jesse Plemons.
