The BBC has disclosed the premiere date for the first Hairy Bikers series after Dave Myers’ cancer diagnosis.
The chef, TV celebrity, and former Strictly contender disclosed in May 2022 that he was going through ‘brutal’ chemotherapy and has since kept followers informed on his condition.
Dave, 66, stated last year that he and co-star Si King, 57, will return to Hairy Bikers, calling it as a ‘big step back to normality’, and the show is now just weeks away.
The Hairy Bikers Go West will premiere on BBC Two on February 6th, with seven episodes shown in weekly installments.
The journey show will see the two reconnect to travel along the west coast of the United Kingdom, beginning in Scotland and concluding in Devon, with Dave even having an emotional homecoming to the county where he was born.
Each week, Dave and Si will base themselves in beautiful locales while exploring the changing surroundings through restaurants, recipes, and innovative new food entrepreneurs.
Their trip will begin on Bute Island and will take them via Dumfries and Galloway, Lancashire, Merseyside, and the Isle of Man, North Wales, down the Severn Estuary, and into Somerset.
In December’s one-off special, The Hairy Bikers: Coming Home for Christmas, Dave opened up about his treatment after fearing he wouldn’t be able to ‘be here’ this Christmas.
‘The first lot of chemo was very, very destructive,’ Dave shared, recalling how he was told by an oncologist that he would be ‘taken to the edge’.
‘You don’t realise what an impact it can have, the debilitating effects kick in quite quickly.
‘My sense of taste and appetite went, I was poorly, you see your weight drop and you’ve got to eat, but it’s finding something you want to eat.
‘I had sores in my mouth. I would fall over quite a lot.’
Dave previously explained why he hasn’t revealed what type of cancer he has, claiming it’s’my business’ and he doesn’t want speculation about how long he has to live.
During filming, Dave, who had 37 rounds of chemotherapy, returned to his bike for the first time in poignant sequences.
‘I knew I’d got my man back,’ Liliana said, remembering Dave returning to a bike shop and putting his helmet back on to take his new bike for a spin.
‘It was like a miracle had happened, because it was something we thought he’d never do again. But he does it.’
‘I was jumping for joy, not for any other reason, but to see my best mate doing what he does,’ Si added.
Hairy Bikers Go West airs weekly on BBC Two and Player from Tuesday 6 February at 7pm.
