Oprah Winfrey’s new TV programme, based on a best-selling novel, has left viewers completely enthralled.
The eight-part miniseries Black Cake will premiere in the UK at the end of this month, with a trailer available this week.
The series, based on Charmaine Wilkerson’s 2022 novel of the same name, is a family story wrapped in a decades-long murder investigation set in Jamaica, Italy, Scotland, England, Wales, and Southern California.
It all begins in the late 1960s, when a runaway bride called Covey vanishes into the waves off the coast of Jamaica, presumed dead or a fugitive fleeing her husband’s death.
In present-day California, a widow named Eleanor Bennett dies of cancer, leaving her two estranged children, Byron and Benny, a flash drive with hitherto unrecorded memories of her journey from the Caribbean to America.
Eleanor’s anecdotes startle and question her children’s assumptions about their family’s background.
The cast includes Mia Isaac, Adrienne Warren, Chipo Chung, Ashley Thomas, Lashay Anderson, Faith Alabi, and Glynn Turman.
Disney Plus has unveiled the teaser for the series, with episodes set to premiere in two weeks.
Since its introduction in the United States, viewers there have already gushed about how captivated they have grown with the show.
Many people who shared their ideas on social media expressed surprise at how involved they had gotten.
’Okay so I started watching Black Cake today. My entire agenda for the day was thrown off. I had to literally pry myself from the TV,’ Vance Gamble posted on X.
‘Black Cake had me in a chokehold. I was drinking and pausing and like heeeeeelllllooooo. It just continues to keep you on the edge,’ user Empress Da Ruler shared.
‘Black Cake one of the best shows I seen in a long time’ Fetti wrote.
Many others said they were hooked.
However, user Joe said he was ‘destroyed’ after tuning in.
‘I’ve binge watched Black Cake. It’s 3am and I’m on episode 4. I have work in the morning, but this maybe the best love story I have ever read. I am emotionally destroyed.’
Marissa Jo Cerar, who also produced The Handmaid’s Tale, has already given the series a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Harpo Films, Oprah’s production firm, bought the TV rights before the novel was even released, following a bidding battle.
Black Cake is streaming from January 31 on Disney Plus.
