Warning: spoilers ahead for episode six of WandaVision.
In last week’s episode of WandaVision, fans were shocked by the sudden appearance of Pietro Maximoff, the brother of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) who died in the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron.
However, it wasn’t the Pietro that was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson who showed up at the door. Instead, Evan Peters, who portrayed a different version of Quicksilver named Peter Maximoff in the X-Men film franchise, was the one who appeared.
In episode six of the Marvel TV series on Disney Plus, Wanda is clearly confused by Pietro’s altered appearance, as she, her husband Vision (Paul Bettany) and her children Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne) dress up and join their neighbours on the streets of Westview for Halloween.
As Pietro excitedly tells Wanda that he’ll help his twin nephews obtain as much candy as they can while trick-or-treating, Tommy exclaims, ‘Yeah. Kick-ass!’, before the three of them speed off.
‘Kick-ass,’ Wanda repeats to herself, looking fairly befuddled by the turn of events.
Several WandaVision realised that this exchange included a sneaky reference to the 2010 film Kick-Ass that starred both Evan and Aaron, with Aaron playing the titular role of the masked superhero and Evan portraying his friend Todd Haynes.
‘That Kick-Ass reference was amazing,’ one person commented.
‘Definitely a Kick-Ass reference during tonight’s episode of #WandaVision,’ another person said.
Someone else expressed their hope that the reference could mean that Aaron will make a surprise appearance at some point in the upcoming episodes.
‘I’m calling it now; If Aaron Taylor Johnson shows up on #WandaVision , it’ll be as Kick-Ass,’ a fan stated.
In the latest episode of WandaVision, it’s made apparent that – unlike Vision – Pietro is clearly aware that Wanda has created a fake reality.
Having previously been questioned by Vision about the lack of children in their neighbourhood, Wanda is probed by Pietro about where they have suddenly come from.
‘Where were you hiding all these kids up till now?’ he asks, before adding: ‘I assume they were all just sleeping peacefully in their beds.’
After asking Pietro if he thinks it’s ‘wrong’ what she’s done, Wanda admits that she isn’t entirely sure how this world came into being, telling him: ‘I only remember feeling completely alone.’
The episode ends with Wanda expanding her hexagonal anomaly, bringing S.W.O.R.D agents and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) along with her.
Will Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) discover more about what’s really going on behind the scenes next week?
WandaVision is available to watch on Disney Plus.
