Andrew Ridgeley has told BBC executives that if they ever invited him to compete on Strictly Come Dancing, he would “go for it.”
WHAM!, a new Netflix documentary, examines the pair’s connection from their days as ‘best pals’ in the 1970s through their superstardom in the 1980s and beyond.
With the spotlight now back on him as a result of the documentary, Andrew has thrown his name in the running for the UK’s favourite dance competition.
‘I’d never say no. I would love to be able to dance properly,’ he said, revealing that, even after a glittering career, he has his eyes on the glitterball trophy.
Speaking to Jo Whiley on Radio 2, he continued: ‘I would love to jive, I would love to cha-cha-cha, and I would love to foxtrot or American Smooth, quickstep.’
He revealed the professional he’d want to dance with if Strictly producers came knocking after naming the dances he’d like to become an expert in.
‘I’m not saying no to Strictly [however] my greatest fear would be not being able to remember the steps. As long as Nadiya was guiding me.’
The Wham! singer and composer, 60, was a lifetime friend of George Michael, his bandmate and stage partner with whom he sold over 35 million records.
George died on Christmas Day, 2016, at the age of 53, after becoming one of the most successful solo musicians of all time following the breakup of Wham! in 1986.
He subsequently said that he was inspired to learn to dance after visiting a salsa bar with his pals while on vacation.
‘There were all these chaps, none of whom were particularly handsome, in the clinch with these unbelievably good looking girls. I missed a trick there.’
On Friday, Jo Whiley said the interview as one of her ‘favourite hours of radio this year’ and teased Andrew’s strictly bow by saying ‘you heard it here first’.
Andrew revealed earlier this month that George’s latter years ‘weren’t the finest,’ but that catching up with dad, even near the end, still felt the same.
Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year.
