What happened at the end of The Bay season 1?

It’s been two years since we last saw police detective Lisa Armstrong (Morven Christie) on our screens in The Bay, investigating strange happenings in the seaside region of Morecambe.

Lisa finds herself in a difficult predicament in season two of the ITV programme, clamouring to get back into the good graces of her boss, DI Tony Manning (Daniel Ryan).

But how did she get here and what happened in season one of Daragh Carville’s intense crime drama?

What happened at the end of The Bay season one?

In the opening of the first season of the series, Lisa embarks on a carefree night on the town with some friends during a hen do, having a sexual encounter with a man in an alley behind a pub.

Soon afterwards, an investigation into the disappearance of twin siblings lands on her lap, who turn out to be the stepchildren of the man, Sean Meredith (Jonas Armstrong), she was involved with.

As a family liaison officer, an important aspect of Lisa’s job is to not become emotionally involved in the cases she is working on.

In a moment of panic, she decides to delete the CCTV footage showing her and Sean having sex in the alley, which happened on the night of the twins’ disappearance and would have provided him with an alibi.

One of the twins, Dylan (Noah Valentine), eventually turns up dead, with Sean subsequently taken in by the police as a suspect.

The rucksack of Dylan’s twin sister, Holly (Darci Shaw), is also found, containing thousands of pounds and a burner phone.

In addition to the discovery of Holly’s suspicious possessions, after a close inspection of Dylan’s body, his sister’s blood is found underneath his fingernails, thus making it seem as though she may be the primary suspect in his murder.

Holly is finally found by Lisa alive, pregnant and ready to confess to being the person behind Dylan’s death, claiming that it occurred by accident while they were fighting.

Nonetheless, by the end of the season, it is revealed that it was in fact Sam (Louis Greatorex) – the father of Holly’s baby – who killed Dylan by accident, when Dylan tried to prevent Holly and Sam from running away together to Manchester after learning his sister was pregnant.

Lisa’s connection with the case became even deeper at this point, as Sam was also the ex of her daughter Abbie (Imogen King) and a friend of her son Rob (Art Parkinson).

Despite the accidental killer being unmasked, Lisa doesn’t get away with tampering with the CCTV footage, as her junior officer Med Kharim (Taheen Modak) discovers the truth of what occurred between her and Sean and what she did to try and cover it up.

As Lisa faces the consequences of her actions, Sean is arrested on different charges, as it emerges he was involved in a drug ring in which Lisa’s daughter also become embroiled, after being groomed by drug dealer Vincent Jackson (Adam Long).

Where does that leave Lisa going into season two?

With Lisa’s misdoings having been uncovered, that leaves her place within the West Lancashire police force in a state of uncertainty.

The trailer for The Bay season two shows Lisa back to work, although she is on probation and now under the leadership of her former inferior, Med.

As her boss Tony warns – if she puts a foot wrong, she could be in serious trouble.

The Bay season 2 launches tonight at 9pm on ITV.
