Stranger Things is finally back after being away from our screens for nearly three years, as Netflix has dropped the first instalment of season four.
After promises of this season being the most bizarre yet, and being ‘out of this world’, the thrilling sci-fi series follows a new ‘war’ for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the rest of the Hawkins gang, and, nearly three years since the last season, is just as scary as we’d expect, with a new gruesome villain known as Vecna.
Despite being the penultimate season of the hit series, the fourth series is actually the longest yet, with nine episodes across the instalment.
But when and where is Stranger Things actually set?
As with its predecessors, season four is set in fictional Hawkins, Indiana. The majority of filming took place in and around Atlanta, Georgia, with Jackson serving as the backdrop for the rural town.
As for the year, a Netflix synopsis for season three explains: ‘It’s 1985 in Hawkins, Indiana, and summer’s heating up. School’s out, there’s a brand new mall in town, and the Hawkins crew are on the cusp of adulthood.
‘Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they’ll have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart. Meanwhile, danger looms.
‘When the town’s threatened by enemies old and new, Eleven and her friends are reminded that evil never ends; it evolves. Now they’ll have to band together to survive, and remember that friendship is always stronger than fear.’
Series four is set six months after The Battle of Starcourt, which Eleven and the gang battled at the end of the last series.
In the latest instalment, the horror has gone beyond Hawkins with rifts appearing all over the world as the Upside Down has taken over 15 landmarks in 14 countries, getting a spooky twist to celebrate the return of Stranger Things at events across the globe.
In a press release, Netflix said: ‘Ever since 1983, when a test subject in a Hawkins, Indiana lab named Eleven ripped open a portal between Hawkins and the Upside Down (a terrifying alternate dimension beneath the surface of this small town), similar rifts have been opening up in the most unexpected places.
‘Now, they’re officially in our world too.’
From the Empire State Building in New York City and Australia’s Bondi Beach to Xbox Plaza in Los Angeles and the Gateway of India in Mumbai, nowhere is safe.
Other locations include Duomo Square in Milan, Malecon Barranquilla in Colombia, Menara Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Al-‘Ula National Monument in Saudi Arabia, Cologne Media Park in Germany, Wawel Castle in Krakow, Poland, Medborgarplatsen in Stockholm, the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao.
There are also rifts at the Telefónica building, Gran Vía 28, Madrid, the Plaza del Callao, Madrid in Spain, plus others in Shoreditch, London and Tokyo, Japan.
Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 is available to watch on Netflix from today, with volume 2 coming out on July 1.
