Since first airing in 2009, Pointless has had over 24 seasons, and is firmly cemented as one of the nation’s favourite quiz shows.

The BBC show, hosted by Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman, sees contestants try to score as few points as possible by giving obscure answers no one else from a panel of 100 anonymous participants can think of to general-knowledge questions.

But who are the panel of 100 people giving their all-important answers?

Here is all you need to know.

Who are the panel of 100 on Pointless?

The aim of Pointless is to find correct but obscure answers to questions. The fewer people from a panel of 100 individuals who agreed with your correct answer, the better.

The goal is to find answers to questions that are correct but none of the panel of 100 have mentioned – this known as ‘a Pointless answer’.

Endemol, the production company that makes Pointless, told Metro.co.uk: ‘The 100 are a cross-section of adults from around the UK, sourced by an online polling company.’

Can you apply to be part of the panel of 100 on Pointless?

Alexander Armstrong explained to RadioTimes: ‘You can’t “apply” to be one of the 100 people because that would then affect the outcome.’

Those polled can’t know they’re being questioned for Pointless, meaning that even the 100 themselves don’t know who they are.

As far as the panel are aware, they are just answering general knowledge questions for a survey – unbeknownst to them their answers will be used for the hit BBC show.

How to apply to be a contestant on Pointless

If you’re interested in appearing on Pointless, you need to be over 18 years of age and have someone who wants to compete with you as part of a pair.

You can apply to be on Pointless by completing the online form.

However, the show is currently not accepting new applicants. It is unknown when the application process will reopen.

Pointless airs weekdays at 5.15pm on BBC One.
