Model Nick Kamen has died at the age of 59 after a long illness, a family friend has said.
A protégé of Madonna, Kamen was known for his work in the world of fashion. Celebrities including Boy George, Lizzy Cundy and the band Duran Duran have paid tribute.
He shot to fame after appearing in an iconic clothing brand advert that got him noticed by the singer when he was just 18-years-old.
Which 80s advert did Nick Kamen star in?
Kamen will long be be remembered for his starring turn in an advert for Levi’s 501 jeans, which aired in the 1984.
Called Launderette, it launched the brand’s first stonewashed jeans.
What happened in the advert?
To the sound of Marvin Gaye classic Heard It Through The Grapevine, Kamen strolls into a launderette and proceeds to strip off, down to his underwear and socks.
He puts his clothes in the machine and is admired by everyone in the launderette as he takes a seat against the wall with the other customers.
Madonna saw him in the striking ad and went on to write his first song, Each Time You Break My Heart, providing backing vocals. The track went on to enter the top 10.
The Like A Prayer hitmaker again featured as a backing vocalist on his second album, on Kamen’s song Tell Me.
