Viewers revisited the biggest scandal in UK game show history on Tuesday evening, tuning in to ITV’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire: The Million Pound Question.
The show took a closer look at the coughing scandal involving married couple Charles and Diana Ingram from 2001.
Looking back, fans couldn’t believe how obvious the cheating was.
Charles – a major in the British army – became one of the few contestants to scoop the £1 million jackpot. However, the episode was pulled from TV, and both Charles and Diana were arrested and put on trial for the cheating claims, alongside supposed co-conspirator Tecwen Whittok.
The incident inspired hit drama Quiz last year, with well-timed coughs from plants in the studio audience pointing Charles to the correct answer.
ITV revisited the shocking episode on Tuesday night, taking an in-depth look at the scandalous episode.
The likes of Jeremy Clarkson and Chris Tarrant provided commentary on the special, as the show took an in-depth look at Charles’ journey to £1million.
Looking back, viewers couldn’t believe how obvious and blatant the coughing was, which helped Charles on his way to winning the top prize.
‘Looking back that coughing was bl**** obvious!’ one wrote.
‘Looking back the cough is so obvious. Also he didn’t know anything and no wonder he got caught,’ another said.
Charles and Diana were given suspended prison sentences of almost two years, however, they have always claimed innocence of all cheating claims.
Charles has since revealed that he doesn’t ever regret going on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? back in 2001 despite the scandal that followed.
