Call The Midwife fans have been waiting for their latest fix of the series and BBC have confirmed that it will be back for a Christmas special this year.
Call The Midwife – starring Jenny Agutter, Judy Parfitt, Helen George, Stephen McGann, Pam Ferris and Miranda Hart over the years – wrapped up its ninth season in February, after eight episodes.
The TV and film industry was then struck by the coronavirus pandemic, with many shows and series being hit by production delays and setbacks – some are still trying to recoup, so it’s no surprise fans had concerns over whether a Call The Midwife special would go ahead this Christmas.
Fear not, however, as it’s set to return on Christmas Day, with a new series to follow early next year in 2021.
When does the Call The Midwife Christmas special air on BBC One?
Call The Midwife will be back on Christmas Day (December 25) with a 90-minute special and it will air at 7.40pm on BBC One – later dropping on BBC iPlayer for viewers to watch via catch up if needed.
This year’s special will take place in December 1965 at Nonnatus House and has been teased as being ‘very traditional’ and ‘very festive’, but you can forget it being a smooth-sailing Christmas, as Sister Monica Joan is rushed to hospital and the circus arrives.
Filming for the Call The Midwife Christmas special wrapped in September, after previously being delayed due to the pandemic.
Helen George, who stars as Trixie, said it is a ‘Christmas miracle’ that the special has managed to go ahead.
Speaking on The One Show, the actress said: ‘We didn’t know whether we were going to be able to film it because we were supposed to start filming when lockdown happened originally.
‘So the fact that it’s even been made is quite frankly a Christmas miracle. It’s just a really lovely, feel-good Christmas show. But I think there’ll probably be a few tears along the way, as there normally is.’
Who is in the cast of the Call The Midwife Christmas 2020 Special?
Ahead of the special airing on BBC, it’s been revealed that fans can expect to see Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett), Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) and Trixie (Helen George).
Shelagh Turner (Laura Main) will be in the special, as will Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates), Dr Turner (Stephen McGann), Fred (Cliff Parisi), Timothy (Max McMillian), Lucille (Leonie Elliot), Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) and Valerie (Jennifer Kirby).
When will Call The Midwife return with a new series?
Call The Midwife will be back with its 10th series next year. The series will return in January 2021 with seven episodes.
