Will there be a Dopesick season 2? Author insists there’s ‘a lot more to cover’

Dopesick is coming to an end on Disney Plus, but it seems there could be more in the pipeline after author Beth Macy noted the current story ties up in 2007.

The finale of the tense eight-parter dropped in the UK on Wednesday, with fans sure to be in a tearful wreck by the end as all the loose ends are tied up.

We will finally see Purdue Pharma rep Billy Cutler (Will Poulter) grow a conscience and Dr Samuel Finnix (Michael Keaton) desperate to do right by Betsy (Kaitlyn Dever).

She is one of the characters featured who lost her life after her addiction to OxyContin amid the American opioids crisis.

But it might not be the end of the road, as despite the ending using flash-forward episodes, the main chapter of the story ends back in 2007.

Author and journalist Beth, whose 2018 book titled Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company That Addicted America acted as a vital source for the project, spoke on the possibility of a season two.

Series creator Danny Strong soon got Beth on board to advise for the drama, and it seems she loved helping out and would be up for more.

Speaking exclusively to, Beth said: ‘I mean, the show basically ends in 2007, it’s 2021 right now.

‘Overdose deaths, we just lost 100,000 people, it’s a national record in the last year.

‘So there’s so much more to say about the story, about the issue of people being dope sick, about the issue of American life expectancy continuing to go down about the rural/urban divide that is just so front and centre and all of our politics right now.

She went on to add: ‘I think there’s a lot more to be mined, but whether or not there’s another season isn’t up to me.

‘I would be thrilled if there was!’

Beth is currently just coming up to the end of writing her next book, and reminded fans her world is ‘not Hollywood’ as she detailed more about her work.

She said: ‘My world is like really being out in communities and trying to find people that exemplify the stories, so I’m really grounded that way, particularly in rural areas, I’ve done a lot of work around that.

‘That’s pretty different from this, the whole Hollywood thing, but I was just so surprised and impressed with the depth again, how much research [all the cast] had all had done.

The journalist explained the amazing level of detail actress Kaitlyn went into to make sure her character came across just right on-screen through her difficult storyline.

She added: ‘I read one interview where said she had made a spreadsheet of all the different qualities that somebody who was being dope sick would go through.

‘So, she would go over it in her mind and there was a person in the crew who was in recovery, and she would ask that person everyday to give her feedback on a performance.’

In the finale, viewers get a glimpse into the events of 2019 that unfolded after Beth’s book concluded.

But we’re sure fans would be keen to delve further into the complex drugs scandal that gripped hold of America in the early 2000s.

Dopesick can be streamed in full on Disney Plus now.
