Phillip Schofield was left in stitches as a poor viewer couldn’t stop retching because of her custard phobia.
Life coach duo the Speakmans – who frequently appear on the show to help viewers with their problems – were on hand during Monday’s episode of This Morning as they spoke to Michelle from Manchester about her unusual fear, and the woman couldn’t even say the word without dry heaving down the phone.
‘I can’t even say it. It’s vile. It makes me skin crawl, it makes me retch, the thought of it, the look of it, the colour of it, the smell of it,’ she said, admitting she simply calls it ‘the yellow stuff you put on apple pies’.
Nik and Eva Speakman – who admitted their morning was brightened by the whole exchange – suggested the fear could be based on a traumatic experience as a child, which turned out to be the case.
Michelle recalled being made to eat custard – sorry, the yellow stuff – at school, and she couldn’t even get through her story without retching, leaving Phil and co-host Rochelle Humes in fits of laughter.
‘We was forced to eat it, and it wasn’t the best of the stuff when I was younger. It was lumpy,’ she said before dry heaving again. ‘If you can get me over this fear, I promise you, I’ll have a bath in it!’
As if the whole situation couldn’t get any wilder, Eva then told Michelle to consider that she and custard are both victims in the situation.
‘This might seem a little bit odd – I see you and the custard as equal victims here,’ she said. ‘You and the yellow stuff are on the same team here because you’re both victims of that person that forced you to eat it in the first place. You think badly of it and it did nothing wrong.’
Michelle kept retching as she recalled her school days, putting the blame on ‘the cooks’ before Eva told her to try and see the situation from a different point of view.
‘We really need you to start seeing this from an adult’s perspective, not a children’s perspective,’ she added. ‘I really want to see you in a bath of the yellow stuff – we will accept that challenge.’
Everyone involved – including Michelle – seemed to have a great time with the phone-in, but Phil still apologised for laughing at her reaction, and joked the Speakmans need to get her sorted out.
‘I am so, so sorry Michelle for laughing, but that noise is an extraordinary noise,’ he giggled. ‘We’ve got to fix that as well – we’ll get you in a bath of that stuff!’
