After 18 years of marriage, it’s important to keep things fresh in the bedroom but for husband and wife John and Shaun-Katherine, their exciting new sexual adventure went horribly wrong.
John, a former World Handball Champion, has been competitive his whole life but his determination, unfortunately, proved to be disastrous between the sheets.
‘Handball means a lot to me, I’ve won four world titles – two singles and two doubles – and I’ve achieved professional status as number three in the world, as well as winning 10 US Master National titles,’ he said during an episode of Sex Sent Me to the ER.
However, John’s sexual ambition proved to be more dangerous than he could have possibly imagined.
In the latest instalment from the TLC series, the athlete recalled enjoying a romantic night in with his wife, complete with candles, dinner and the Kama Sutra.
‘When I pulled out the Kama Sutra, it was kind of a little bit of a joke to start with, because I know he’s not as flexible as I am,’ Shaun-Katherine chuckled. But this was no laughing matter.

‘We made this game up where I get to pick three and she got to pick three. We were going to do it the whole night!’ explained John.
John was ready to bend his body into positions it had never been bent before, and ‘things were going well’ he said.
‘And then things just went really wrong,’ Shaun-Katherine cut him off.
While the couple were tangled up, lost in the look of love, the passion came crashing down as John fell off the bed and screamed in agony.
And then things just went really wrong
‘I dismounted, the Olympics would have given me a 10, because I flipped on my back and fell out of the bed and immediately there’s pain,’ John said.
But rather than calling 9-1-1, Shaun-Katherine began swatting, thinking they’d been joined by an unwanted third party.
‘We had had an incident just the week before were we found a Camel Spider in our bed,’ she explained. ‘I was confused and all I could think was there must be a spider in the bed!’

Without a spider in sight, it was clear something terrible had happened as John began moaning and groaning – his ankle in agony.
‘It looked kind of like jelly,’ Shaun-Katherine recalled.
As it turned out, John had ruptured his tendon and was immediately rushed into surgery.
‘Tendons or muscles will tear or rupture when two opposing forces are pulling that tendon or muscle apart,’ Emergency Physician Dr David Meyers explained.

‘In the case of an achilles injury, the foot is keeping the bottom of the achilles tendon in this direction, the muscles are contracting in this [the opposite] direction, and sometimes that force is so great and so quick that it just snaps.’
Not only was the wound agonising, it could have ended John’s handball career, setting him back 18 months of training.
‘I came back better than ever after the surgery,’ he said. ‘No lasting effects for athletic endeavours. It’s healed up nicely, the doctor did a great job.’
‘We’re a little more cautious about a few things,’ Shaun-Katherine admitted. ‘Being creative is something you want to work your way up to… and you definitely want to stretch!’
Sex Sent Me To The ER airs at 11pm on Thursdays exclusively on TLC.
