Years and Years release acoustic cover of Pet Shop Boys song It’s A Sin for Russell T. Davis’ new show

Actor and Years and Years singer Olly Alexander has released an acoustic version of the Pet Shop Boys song It’s A Sin ahead of the new Russel T. Davis show of the same name.

It’s A Sin looks set to be a smash hit. The Channel 4 show is premiering tonight, and will be a five-part series exploring the AIDs crisis in the 1980s and how it affected the gay community with creator Russell T. Davies casting only gay actors in all the gay roles.

The show stars Olly Alexander in a main role, who is best known for being the lead singer of Years and Years. Alexander plays Ritchie Tozer, a closeted 18-year-old student from the Isle of Wight who arrives in London, exploring himself and his sexuality with his new found freedom.

The show follows five characters as they come to terms with the disease and what it means for them.

Alexander is no stranger to the screen either. Before this, he had roles in The Riot Club (2014), Great Expectations (2012) and Gulliver’s Travels (2010).

Alexander looks to be merging his talents on the project too. While he is prominent in the series, he has also now released an acoustic version of the Pet Shop Boys song It’s A Sin.

On Twitter, he confirmed a portion of the proceeds would be donated to the George House Trust, a charity focused on providing support for those affected by HIV.

The track is available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Deezer and Tidal.

The original song, released in 1987, remains one of the band’s enduring tracks. It acted as the lead single on their second album, Actually. It spent three weeks on top of the UK Singles Chart and became the duo’s second number-one single.

It went on to even achieve a number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100.

It’s A Sin comes from ex-Doctor Who showrunner and Queer as Folk creator Russell T. Davies. The show was originally titled Boys, but was forced to change due to Amazon Prime The Boys.

It’s A Sin debuts tonight on Channel 4 and will feature five episodes, concluding on February 19.
