You can now watch BBC shows with your family – wherever they are – this Christmas

The BBC is making it a little bit easier for families to spend Christmas with loved ones remotely, with its BBC Together service.

The broadcaster is helping people to sync up shows through the platform and watch at the same time in different households.

It’s a chance to watch popular shows on the iPlayer like EastEnders, His Dark Materials and Gavin and Stacey together – even if viewers aren’t all in the same room or even the same house.

‘If you’re stuck in a different place from your friends or family, BBC Together is a way you can still watch or listen to BBC programmes with them at exactly the same time,’ a message on the BBC website reads.

‘To use it, you find the link of a programme or piece of video you want to watch with others – from BBC iPlayer, Sounds or Bitesize, BBC News and Sport websites – and paste it into the BBC Together service.’

‘This creates a new group session, which you can share via a link with your friends or family. You are now in control and can pause, play, seek, or choose a new programme for everyone to watch at once.’

TV and film is arguably more important than ever at the end of 2020.

A psychologist recently spoke to and recommended hosting remote film and TV nights for people missing family this Christmas – something BBC Together could be ideal for.

According to psychologist Dr Tara Quinn-Cirillo, Christmas telly can do an awful lot of good for our mental health this festive period, and help us all out when we’re missing family.

‘Take turns choosing a film – put on a different time, even in a different house,’ she said. ‘Perhaps you can have FactTime on all the way through a film, or for a debrief at the end. ‘You could also choose the same kind of foods. You can say “we’re having a popcorn or a curry night”. It’s all about trying to do shared things as a family, even if you’re in different houses.’
