Jon Richardson looks quite different in the new season of his Dave comedy, Meet the Richardsons.
The comedian, who appears frequently on 8 out of 10 Cats, has turned into an elderly guy using excellent special effects makeup, prosthetics, and grey hair. To complement the new image, Jon dressed differently than he typically does, wearing a wool cardigan.
Jon has been speeding around on a mobility scooter, pretending to be someone twice his age, and he appears to be having a great time.
Jon may be 41, but viewers will have trouble remembering that when the show airs later this month.
He changed the look for the fifth season of the mockumentary, which also stars Lucy Beaumont (Jon’s real wife and talented comedian). The pair play fictionalised versions of themselves in the famous programme, where they attempt to break the ‘Strictly Curse’ with Dianne Buswell’s aid.
Lucy, 40, who is up for Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme at the Bafta TV Awards in 2023, has hinted at what we may anticipate.
‘The idea for the next series is that we want to do a sitcom and make it a bit like Heartbeat with gags, but because Jon wants to retire soon, he wants to win an award so he wants the sitcom to be more surreal and abstract.’
She continued to The Sun: ‘Each of us goes and comes up with ideas for our own sitcom, then we take it to a focus group and we have to come back together’.
Dave has also given a summary, giving us a better indication of what is to come: ‘Lucy’s career has been boosted by her BAFTA nomination, and she is now being offered series ranging from the extremely huge to the really strange. Jon is content with Lucy’s achievement; he is not competitive at all and recognises when he has been defeated.
‘So, while Lucy’s busy on Taskmaster, Bake Off and Celebrity Chinese Whispers, Jon is plotting his escape from telly, with one last, lucrative job hosting a new daytime quiz show,’ it teased.
‘Meanwhile, at home, a global superstar and her partner move in next door, making it harder than ever to keep up with the neighbours.
‘Lucy’s turning 40 and she’d really like Jon to go with her to Glastonbury to celebrate. He’ll never agree to that. But will they both agree that five series of Meet The Richardsons is more than enough?’ We hope not!
The show that began in 2020 often includes celebrity cameos, who play exaggerated versions of themselves. Fans can look forward to seeing Amanda Abbington, Ben Shephard, The Cheeky Girls, Gregg Wallace, and Kimberly Wyatt, all popping up throughout the latest series, which begins on April 8.
Lucy revealed celebrities don’t have a rigid script and are encouraged to improvise: ‘It really does feel like we’re playing all day, it’s a lovely way to film. I couldn’t imagine learning lines.’
Lucy and Tim Reid wrote what you’re reading. Whatever they’re doing is evidently effective, since they won a Broadcast Digital Award for Best Comedy in 2021.
Jon previously discussed how they manage to work together while maintaining a strong relationship.
‘We’re always working on it and to balance that amongst still maintaining a private life isn’t easy, and I think we’re really good at it and there’s times obviously it’s difficult because marriage is difficult anyway, you know, I could be a dentist and you know, Lucy could be a teacher and marriage is just difficult,’ he shared.
‘So this extra element doesn’t make it any easier. But I do think we’re actually quite good.’
Meet the Richardson season 5 starts airing April 8 9pm on Dave
