Kim Kardashian appeared to make a huge mistake while on a TikTok live with her eldest daughter North West, mistaking the Palestinian flag for the Brazilian flag.
The 42-year-old mother of four made an unexpected return with the 10-year-old this week after a relatively lengthy absence from the social media site, where the duo talked with followers and answered questions.
However, as the Israel-Hamas conflict continues to destroy the Middle East, scores of viewers began sending in the Palestinian flag in solidarity with the residents imprisoned in Gaza as a result of the terrorist strikes on Israel.
In a very weird moment, Kim explained her daughter it was the Brazilian flag while watching the comments stream in.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, North leans into the television and asks, ‘What is that flag?’
To which reality star Kim responds confidently: ‘That’s Brazil. That’s where Neymar [is from], because we’re talking about all the soccer stuff.’
Kim then informs North that she is leaving TikTok to perform a Twitter Q&A instead.
Fans were taken aback by the apparent gaffe, which soon spread over the internet, prompting online critics to weigh in, with one calling it ’embarrassing.’
Another slammed it as ‘disgusting,’ while one asked: ‘Does Kim really not know the difference in the Brazilian flag and the Palestinian flag?’
However, many others defended Kim, claiming she lied on purpose to keep North from learning about the atrocities taking place in the conflict.
One user praised Kim for her ‘good parenting… she was quick on her feet,’ another agreeing she was ‘protecting her baby.’
Others, however, chastised Kim for not gently explaining the reality to her daughter, with some pointing out that North could easily read the new comments claiming it was a Palestinian flag.
More pointed out that others in North’s family, including Kylie Jenner, had sent comments in support of Israel, implying that North was already aware of the conflict.
Given Kim’s swift attempt to halt the livestream, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star may have explained the matter to North off-camera.
On Saturday, the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas started strikes on Israel, sparking a conflict that has taken hundreds of lives on both sides.
Kim previously came out against the Hamas attack, saying she was ‘devastated’ by the ‘horrific sights’ seen across the globe, but she wants people who are suffering to know they are ‘not alone’ in their sorrow.
In a statement posted to Instagram, she said: ‘A message to my Jewish friends and family. I love you. I support you. I have heard about how scared you feel during this time, and I want you to know you are not alone in this.
‘My heart is broken seeing the videos of these babies and families being terrorized and murdered in front of the whole world! As human beings with a heart, how can anyone not be devastated by these horrific images that we will never be able to unsee?
‘Brutal terrorism has taken innocent lives and now both Israeli and Palestinian civilians are suffering and paying the greatest price there is.’
She added: ‘‘I also ask that, during difficult times like these, not to judge who is or isn’t speaking out, because everyone should be allowed to deal with times of crisis in the way that they feel most comfortable, whether it be privately or publicly.’
