One year after Britney Spears was freed from her controversial conservatorship, her father Jamie Spears has insisted it was a ‘great tool’ that helped her get her kids back and even went so far as to say he doesn’t know if she would be alive without it.
For 13 years, Jamie had been in control of the Toxic singer’s wellbeing and financial matters – leading passionate fans to campaign for her release through the #FreeBritney movement.
In a court hearing on Friday, November 12, 2021, Judge Brenda Penny made the historic ruling to end the court order after more than a decade, handing the mom-of-two her life back.
Since then, the pop star has returned to the limelight, and gone through several highs and lows over the last year, documenting them on social media.
The 41-year-old married Sam Asghari in a ‘fairytale’ ceremony, heartbreakingly opened up on suffering a miscarriage, soared up the charts with her Elton John duet, and has been revelling in her freedom on social media – although her racey posts have been deemed controversial.
Despite relishing her freedom and support from fans, Jamie in a new interview has called the conservatorship a ‘great tool’.
The 70-year-old said: ‘Not everybody’s going to agree with me.
‘It’s been one hell of a time. But I love my daughter with all my heart and soul.
‘Where would Britney be right now without that conservatorship? And I don’t know if she’d be alive. I don’t.’

He added to the Mail on Sunday: ‘For protecting her, and also protecting the kids, conservatorship was a great tool. Without it, I don’t think she would have got the kids back.’
In November, Britney’s legal team demanded that her father be held in contempt of court over an issue relating to medical records.
The pop sensation’s attorney, Mathew Rosengart, filed a motion for sanctions against Jamie Spears and his lawyers after accusing them of purposefully looking to disclose Britney’s private medical records, to embarrass and intimidate her.

In the motion, the legal expert accused Britney’s father and his team of ‘abusing’ the discovery process and using ‘bad faith litigation tactics’.
The accusations came after the overseeing Judge Brenda Penny gave them a warning at a hearing last month for submitting the records.
The move followed a failed bid to have the court order the singer to be deposed.
Mathew stated that Jamie had engaged in a ‘scorched earth litigation campaign against Britney Spears’ since he was suspended as conservator of her affairs in September 2021.
The argument also claimed Britney’s dad set out to embarrass and intimidate his daughter, as well as generate wasteful legal expenses in order to receive payment from her estate.
