Olivia Colman, an actress and national treasure, has revealed the one excruciating cosmetic treatment she has undergone ‘loads’ of times.
During an interview with Vernon Kay, the Oscar-winning actress from The Favourite and this year’s Wicked Little Letters confessed that she isn’t afraid to use cosmetic surgery to maintain her appearance.
The 50-year-old actress admits to having ‘tonnes’ of Botox, a series of injections used to smooth out creases and wrinkles in the face.
It accomplishes this by using a specific toxin (pain!) that temporarily inhibits muscle action wherever administered.
Colman revealed her Botox use when speaking with Radio 2 host Kay and her Wicked Little Letters co-star, Jessie Buckley.
As Kay interrogated the couple on former pop classics, he realised that he and Colman were the same age.
Shocked, Colman replied: ‘Are we? I look like your mum, you look so young!’
She continued: ‘That’s really annoying. How much Botox have you had?’
When Kay denied ever having had the procedure, Colman admitted: ‘Oh, I’ve had loads!’
‘Does it hurt?’ an intrigued Kay asked.
‘Yeah, it’s needles in your face,’ Colman quipped back.
This isn’t the first time the star has spoken of her Botox use; in a 2015 interview with The Times, she described how she would use it between movie and television work.
‘I have done Botox and I loved it. I’ve done it when I know there is a big gap [between acting roles],’ she said.
She went on to relate how she kept the therapy a secret from her husband, Ed Sinclair, who was surprised when she finally came clean.
‘I didn’t tell my husband and then for about six months he kept saying, “Hello Pretty!” and then I told him and he found it hilarious,’ she added.
Colman rose to prominence as Sophie on the C4 comedy Peep Show, before receiving critical praise in the prestige dramas Broadchurch and The Crown.
She won an Oscar for best actress in 2019 for her portrayal of Queen Anne and was nominated for her roles in The Father and the 2021 psychological drama The Lost Daughter.
Colman is presently starring in Wicked Little Letters, a scandalous drama about a little English village that is rocked when its citizens begin receiving a series of potty-mouthed poison pen letters from the raucous and boorish Rose (Jessie Buckley).
Colman portrays Edith, a local Conservative who is outraged by the messages and vows to make Rose suffer for the crime. But does Rose truly bear responsibility?
This is not the first time she and Buckley, 34, have been in a film together, but it is the first time they have shared a scene.
They first appeared in The Lost Daughter, playing the same character at different stages in her life.
Both received nominations for their performances in the film: Colman for best actress in a starring role and Buckley for best supporting actress.
