Rebel Wilson claimed she was ‘shocked’ by the abuse she received after going out with her partner Ramona Agruma to two parties a week after her daughter was born.
The Pitch Perfect star gave birth to her daughter, Royce Lillian, through surrogate in November of last year.
She then published images of herself and her entrepreneur partner, 39, attending gatherings hosted by famous acquaintances Leonardo DiCaprio and Paris Hilton on the same night little over a week later, drawing the ire of moms on Instagram and condemnation for leaving the house so early.
For the first time, the 42-year-old expressed her reaction to the uproar, explaining her decision and pointing out that new dads face significantly less scrutiny.
‘I guess it was just a week before I got mum-shamed,’ she said in a recent interview, referring to her ‘one night out’ with her partner following the birth of Royce.
‘I was surprised by the criticism since Chris Hemsworth goes to the gym and no one yells, “Where are your kids?” But why does it happen to every woman?’ On the Life Uncut podcast, she joined hosts Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne.
The Bridesmaids actress admitted she was hesitant to go out so soon after the birth of her daughter, but that her nanny pushed them, telling her that Royce would be ‘asleep by seven o’clock’ anyhow and that she was ‘absolutely fine’.
‘It’s a little bit [of] labour in a way,’ Rebel said of the gatherings. Like, I’m talking to directors or other actors about possible collaborations, so it’s a little bit of work and a little bit of fun, and then we were practically home by midnight.’
The Australian actress also stated that women should not judge other women based on their parenting choices or how they juggle work and motherhood.
‘Just because you become a mother, doesn’t mean that you lose your identity as a person. It doesn’t mean you can’t go out with friends, or you can’t go on a holiday. It doesn’t mean you can’t have a career,’ she said.
She said that she was ‘finding it incredibly hard to do all my work and have the kid,’ but that this ‘doesn’t mean you give up who you are as a person’.
‘People will say I’m in a privileged position, which I am, but I think it’s so outdated. Why is it women shaming other women? It always is.’
She added: ‘I worked hard to get into a position where I had a really great household and stable life to bring up the baby, but we don’t go out that much though because we want to stay home and chill and we’re so exhausted!’
She did, however, divulge another incident since Royce’s birth when she had felt tempted to go out.
‘Every now and again… we just travelled to Dubai with the baby because there was a free Beyonce performance, and we thought, “Yeah, why not?”‘
Rebel has kept her daughter primarily off social media since announcing her arrival, but she did just share her face for the first time in adorable clip earlier in February.
The actress, who was lounging in a cosy recliner at her Los Angeles home, cuddled her newborn baby girl while holding her phone above the couple to catch the event on tape.
During the video, spectators got a never-before-seen look at the tiny girl’s face as she stuck her tongue out at her doting mother, who replicated the pose back to the camera.
