Warner Bros has finally released the first trailer for writer and director Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and well, let’s just say we can’t wait for summer 2023.
Here’s everything we know about the upcoming big-screen live-action remake (Barbie has been on the small screen in various animated TV series for years) of the world’s most iconic Mattel doll.
Come on Barbie, let’s go party, indeed.
Who is in the cast?
Margot Robbie stars as the titular blonde girlboss, and she has a whole lot of star power with her, namely her Ken being played by Ryan Gosling (because who else?). ‘It comes with a lot of baggage!’ the Wolf of Wall Street star told British Vogue in June 2021.
‘And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, I know what that movie is going to be, and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, Oh, well, maybe I don’t….’

Will Ferrell is down to play CEO of toy company Mattel, plus America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, Emerald Fennell, and Emma Mackey are all set to have parts among others, as rumour has it the Barbie movie will feature multiple Barbies and Kens.
What is the plot?
A storyline has been kept sealed tight (perhaps in a pink Barbie display case), but the adaptation will feature multiple variations of Barbie and Ken.
Reports suggest that Barbie gets thrown out of her universe for not being ‘perfect’ enough, and as a result, tries her luck in the real world. We do know there’ll be rollerblades and pink. Lots and lots of pink.
Is there a trailer?
There most certainly is, and it’s well, as plastic as you’d imagine. Greta, who co-wrote the film with her partner writer/director Noah Baumbach has said to expect the unexpected.
In the clip, which is just over a minute long, Margot is dressed as a larger-than-life version of the very first Barbie, who wore a horizontal-stripe bathing suit and black heels, all set to music in tribute to Stanley Kubrick.
What is the release date for the Barbie movie?
Barbie will be released on July 21, 2023.
