More than a decade after its initial release, one of Scarlett Johansson’s most contentious films has risen to the top ten of Netflix’s global list.
Lucy, starring Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-sik, and Amr Waked, premiered in 2014 to mixed reviews and presently has a 47% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film follows student Lucy (Scarlett) as she is duped into being a drug mule before having a bag of synthetic narcotic sewed onto her body when she is apprehended.
She is kicked in the stomach, forcing the bag to rupture and the medicine to pour into her system, imbuing her with’superhuman’ abilities.
Despite being released ten years ago, it has recently regained popularity on streaming platforms, becoming the sixth most-watched film internationally.
Between August 19 and August 25, Netflix reports that it received over 6,500,000 hours of viewing and over 4,400,000 total views.
The Union has topped the charts for the second week in a row, with Incoming, Migration, The Emoji Movie, Night School, and the Kingsman franchise also in the running.
Despite its recent success, Lucy has been panned on Rotten Tomatoes, with many viewers calling it ‘the worst movie’ in years.
In fact, Annie A said: ‘Just about the worst movie I’ve seen in years. I’m not even sure what the point of it was by the end. Morgan Freedman barely had a role in the movie. The trailer is deceptive. Spare yourself.’
‘It was just awful from start to finish,’ Joshua H agreed. ‘Too outlandish and corny. Storyline was terrible. Honestly can’t believe Morgan Freeman agreed to be in this. It was just bad.’
Nathan W fumed: ‘Honestly one of the worst movies I’ve seen. Boring, poorly done, and just hard to watch.’
‘Really bad. Laughably bad. “I feel violated” bad. Thank God for fast forward bad,’ Stephen G wrote.
Colin M penned: ‘Stunning slick visuals with jubberish dialogue in search of a plot. Gorgeous to look at, but quite nonsensical [sic].’
As Joey added: ‘One of the worst action movies I have ever seen. The only movie in my life I wanted to just leave.’
Although Lucy has been cast, it has been reported that a second series is in the works, with Morgan returning his part, although there are few additional information available.
One individual who wants additional information is director Luc Besson, who wrote and directed the original.
‘I heard that [was happening],’ he recently told the Playlist. ‘I even read that. Yeah, I was glad to hear [it.] I said, “Oh? Give me the script.”
‘That’s the problem sometimes with the internet is I don’t know where [the information] comes from. Sometimes, I see that my name is on a movie that I haven’t been aware of.’
That’s not a no…
Lucy is available to stream on Netflix now.
