Over the past 13 years, I’ve considered myself to be one of The Great British Bake Off‘s most devoted viewers.
Yet, for the first time, I spent the final series groaning at flat jokes, tired of seeing participants struggle through impossible trials – my favourite programme had devolved into a stale mess.
To say I was upset and heartbroken would be an understatement.
Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding simply didn’t get along anymore; they were like two uncomfortable coworkers tasked with hosting the workplace Christmas party.
Even when Matt announced his departure, no one tipped to replace him restored my trust in the programme – Katherine Ryan, Dawn French, Richard Ayoade – all comedic heavyweights who I’m sure would have been fantastic.
All of them would have bounced off Noel with the wacky banter we’ve grown accustomed to.
I’m sceptical that any of them could have entirely revitalised the tired concept and made us all fall back in love with Bake Off.
There is literally only one lady with the Midas touch, an unintentional comic who, by being the most unprofessional presenter on the air, is the most dependable for TV gold.
The lady is the people’s Babs… Alison Hammond is an actress.
Whichever show she puts her name to, even if it isn’t a smash hit (I’m looking at you, I Can Feel Your Voice), seeing Alison perform anything has always been a thrill. She practically made This Morning’s weather forecast noticeable by throwing a topless model into the frigid River Mersey.
She encapsulates everything I’ve always liked about Bake Off: the belly laughter that may erupt from anyone at any time, as well as the pure mayhem that is both hysterical and nerve-racking.
Perhaps the ovens should be afraid for their life, while the bakers should be afraid for their cakes.
Yet, as fans, we can rest easy knowing that, following Bake Off’s slow slide, we’ll be able to enjoy the finest series of Bake Off in years – or, dare I say, ever – this summer.
