Halloween is past, and it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas – at least according to Asda, which has released the first holiday advertisement of 2023.
The brief teaser includes the king of Christmas himself, Michael Bublé, and is not your typical supermarket Yuletide advertisement.
The 60-second commercial depicts Asda staff discover the multi-platinum artist locked away, leaning into jokes that he ‘defrosts’ in time for the festive season.
In an even more high-profile twist, the Christmas teaser is reported to be directed by none other than Marvel heavyweight – and Rita Ora‘s husband – Taika Waititi.
Three employees are resting in the break room when they hear unusual noises at midnight on November 1 and go in quest of the cause, so far so Halloween-y.
The slightly eerie tone fades fast, giving way to glittering lights and’magical’ aisles filled with tinsel, toys, and Christmas trees.
The trio walk through the warehouse, still hearing a distant gargling sound which leads them to a mysterious door, reading: ‘MB inside. Do not open ‘til 1.11.23.’
To round out the teaser, the Christmas star placed an Asda name tag to his outfit and said, ‘Shall we?’
Will Ferrell made an unexpected – and chaotic – appearance in last year’s commercial, bringing Buddy the Elf back for the first time in 20 years.
He’s nearly run over by trolleys before heading inside and receiving a tour of the store, especially the bread aisle, and we can’t blame him.
Only time will tell what new employee Michael gets up to, but it’s certainly getting us in the holiday mood.
