Annie Murphy has shared her response to learning she’d be filming *that* crazy Joan Is Awful moment.
The new season of Black Mirror has officially premiered on Netflix, with the Schitt’s Creek actress playing Joan – or so she believes.
In a surprising twist, when Joan’s life is turned upside down when all her secrets are revealed in a massive TV adaption starring Salma Hayek as TV Joan, Annie’s Joan finds she isn’t the actual Joan.
Confused? Us too.
However, before she makes the unexpected discovery, Annie’s character attempts to take matters into her own hands by staging a situation that she believes Salma (who portrays herself in the episode as Joan) would never do.
Except she’s completely wrong.
What actually happened is that neither Annie’s Joan nor Salma have any control over what happens, and Joan’s attempts are futile.
Joan is seen eating a lot of fast food burgers before dressing up as a cheerleader, breaking into a wedding, and defecating (very loudly) in front of a room full of people in the middle of a church aisle.
Quite revolting.
However, the actress has stated that she was more than willing to take on the challenge.
Speaking recently, Annie said: ‘So we got to that scene and I was just like, put me in coach. Like, this is my wheelhouse right here, s**ting in a church.
‘I couldn’t be more excited about it, and I could picture it.
‘Charlie [Brooker] wrote it very vividly and so I can picture it and I knew it was going to be so much fun to shoot and the day that we actually got to shoot it, it was so much fun and we all reverted back to like, you know, 10 year old kids being like, this is gross, but we just cackled and cackled on that day.’
As the show went, it became clear that it wasn’t just Annie who had to record that moment, but Salma as well.
Annie continued: ‘Shooting it and then watching the Salma shoot it in her very Salma like Vanity Fair way, and then Kayla who played source Joan also shooting it… It was a really fun day in the life of Black Mirror acting.’
Salma, the star of Magic Mike, recently claimed she was concerned about getting in jail because of the gruesome sequence.
She told Radio Times: ‘It’s as if I created an alter ego where I could do the most disgusting, grotesque things that you would never do in real life… and have permission to do that.
‘It’s been surreal, and I think only a mind like Charlie Brooker’s could have come up with such a concept.
‘There are so many moments that shocked me in the script. There is one huge one that I had to come to terms with, and made me ask myself, “Do I really want to do this? Am I going to get in trouble?”‘
Black Mirror is available to watch on Netflix.
