The 47-year-old dancer, who performed in 15 seasons of the famous BBC talent show until retiring in 2018, has stated that sparks frequently ignite between the pros and their celebrity partners, and that many of the flirtations blossom into romance – but he insists that the majority of them remain private.
Speaking to The Sun, he explained: ‘Show me a series where there hasn’t been a little bit of love magic. Generally, every year something happens between a dancer and a contestant.
‘I’ve been in series where five or six little love connections have been happening and most of them haven’t been found out.’
Brendan went on to insist romance between the dancing partners is to be expected because of the amount of time they spend together and the tactile nature of dancing.
He added: ‘In that particular environment, where you are hands-on with each other 24/7, there’s a little excitement between two people.’
It comes after previous Strictly participant HRVY revealed the so-called Strictly curse to be’real’ in an interview with Metro.co.uk.
‘I know it’s true,’ said the 24-year-old pop artist, who featured on the BBC show in 2020. I’m not going to say anything else, but as someone who’s done the programme – I’m not claiming I’ve seen it directly – but I may have seen… It is unquestionably genuine.
‘People talk about it and it’s like a bantering thing and I thought the same thing until I did it and then was like, “Wow, yeah.”‘
He explained: ‘It could be the intimacy of dancing. It could be the fact that you’re with a group of people for weeks and weeks and weeks.
‘You could almost say it’s like Love Island but you’re not on an island, you’re in a dance studio but it’s definitely real.’
In 2018, comedian Seann Walsh was spotted kissing his professional partner Katya Jones, which was one of the most notable examples of the Strictly curse in recent years.
At the time, Katya was married to fellow dancer Neil Jones, while Seann was dating actor Rebecca Humphries.
Stacey Dooley and her partner, Kevin Clifton, won the sixteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2018.
By April of the following year, the pair had confirmed their relationship, and they revealed last year that they were expecting their first child.
Following considerable conjecture regarding the health of their relationship after finishing as runners-up on Strictly Come Dancing in 2018, Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell got together.
Dianne parted up with her partner, Emmerdale star Anthony Quinlan, while competing in the competition.
Rachel Riley, Countdown star, announced her divorce with Jamie Gilbert, whom she met at university, in November 2013.
Later that year, she began dating her Strictly partner Pasha Kovalev. They married in 2019 and share two daughters.
Recently, John Whaite, who performed in the Strictly 2021 series, told up about ‘falling in love’ with his professional partner Johannes Radebe while in a relationship.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday on BBC One and iPlayer.
