Daisy May Cooper has conceded that her joke about the Sugababes at this year’s Brit Awards ‘didn’t come over’ the way she had intended.
The 2023 awards presentation, which honoured the greatest and brightest performers in the music business in the UK and throughout the world, generated a lot of buzz.
People’s tongues were wagging, however, when This Country star Daisy appeared on stage to accept the award for best alternative rock.
She said that she saw the Sugababes in the toilet, adding, ‘And they weren’t using coke – they were lovely,’ in a remark that ITV failed to muffle at the last minute.
Many viewers considered the joke to be amusing, and Daisy has now shared her experience with the fallout over a month later.
‘I had the horrors so much the next day, that didn’t come across the way I wanted it to,’ the 36-year-old confessed to Bustle.
The actor went on to say that when she spotted the band in the toilet, they were only putting their lip liner ‘and they were nice’.
‘It came across so bad you know,’ Daisy remarked, before also adding: ‘But I couldn’t give a f**k ‘cause it came from a good place.’
Daisy had told everyone watching the Brit Awards that her performance would be’messy,’ so they should have been prepared for a laugh-out-loud moment.
‘My God, what does the Brits night look like for you?’ Roman Kemp questioned her on Capital Morning prior of the ceremony.
‘Urr…Messy… ‘It’s going to be great,’ she said at the time.
Roman’s co-host Chris Stark then told her: ‘You could cause a scene at the Brits as you’re the perfect character to go and do something mad.’
Daisy was revealed as one of the performers on The Masked Singer UK earlier this year, after competing as the cute Otter.
‘I loved every single second of it. I did this for my daughter Pip, who is a massive fan of the show,’ she said after she was unmasked.
