Dan Walker is the latest star weighing in over Matt Hancock’s controversial cameo on this year’s I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!.
The former health secretary made his jungle debut during Wednesday’s edition alongside comedian Seann Walsh.
As expected, Mr Hancock’s arrival sent shockwaves into camp with Charlene White being the first to grill the politician while 80s pop star Boy George tearfully considered leaving the show, following his mother’s hospitalisation with Covid during the pandemic.
Fellow stars have slammed Mr Hancock’s involvement on the programme, but Mr Hancock is determined to show that ‘politicians are normal human beings is actually really important’.
However, former BBC Breakfast host Dan believes appearing on a reality show might not be the way to go.
‘I’ve thought about this overnight and it’s clear that a lot of people are finding it very difficult to watch Matt Hancock on #ImACeleb,’ he tweeted.
‘If he really wants to show viewers the human side of politicians, maybe he could leave the show & donate his £400,000 to the NHS.’
In a separate tweet, the Channel 5 host stressed that this ‘isn’t an anger thing.’
‘I like #ImACeleb & am happy for him to be on it but it seems many feel it it too raw and too soon – particularly when he’s a serving MP,’ he added.
‘If his motivation really is to show he’s a ‘normal human’ then he could send a powerful message.’
Despite the controversy, Mr Hancock’s arrival drew in an average of 7.9 million tuned in to watch his first appearance with a peak of 9.1 million.
I’m A Celebrity’s launch night on Sunday saw the ITV reality show capture 9.1 million viewers on average – and a peak of over 10 million – and the second night fell to 8.2 million.
Viewers will be seeing the politician endure another brutal trial appropriately titled Tentacles of Terror.
In the spoiler clip, Mr Hancock is seen diving underwater to collect stars for camp, however he won’t be alone.
It is a Bushtucker trial after all.
I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! returns tonight at 9pm on ITV.
