On Friday, Good Morning Britain ended in utter turmoil as guests fought over the continuing issue involving Boris Johnson.
The former Conservative Prime Minister resigned as an MP this week, following the release of the Privileges Committee’s 30,000-word report on Partygate, which concluded that the politician had lied and deceived parliament.
The committee also recommended that Johnson not be granted the legislative pass normally granted to former members, and there is currently a dispute concerning his future.
Former Tory MEP David Campbell Bannerman appeared on Friday’s broadcast with lawyer and political activist Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu.
Tensions between the two were already high when the section began at the conclusion of the show, and hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard were obliged to hand over to Lorraine while they were still squabbling.
‘They’re not going to stop,’ Kate said, as her co-star added: ‘We’ll hand over to Ranvir, have a good weekend.’
Both shrugged blankly and gave the baton to Ranvir Singh, who said, ‘Look, it makes sense!’ Are you still suffering from BFS after the break? That’s Boris Fatigue Syndrome – you may think so after that.’
At the opening of the discussion, David claimed that downplaying Johnson’s perceived accomplishments, such as the vaccine rollout and backing for Ukraine, was akin to claiming “you didn’t need Churchill to win the war.”
He described the idea of trying to strip of his perks as a former MP and PM as ‘spiteful’, but Shola launched into an attack on Johnson, alleging that he has always lied and ‘ended his political career as a liar’.
The politician responded by asking if she has ‘ever lied’, but she added: ‘Let us give Boris Johnson his flowers, because he’s consistent to the end.’
David later changed tact and argued that ‘this is about Brexit’, telling Shola: ‘You hate Brexit.’
‘This has jack all to do with Brexit,’ she fired back. ‘With all due respect. You and I are adults… please do not come here with an asinine argument and sound delusional.’
‘I’m trying to get my argument in there,’ he said, before repeatedly saying ‘you’re a lawyer’ and asking her professional opinion on the committee’s findings.
He added: ‘Shola, can I just ask? You’re a lawyer. Excuse me! Can I just make a point?’
‘I’ve started speaking so I’ll finish,’ she responded, as Kate and Ben tried to regain some kind of order over the whole thing, and Shola said: ‘Oh thank you for telling me my profession…’
She laughed at his sources during the debate and accused him of ‘whataboutism’, with both of them shouting over each other as the GMB team had to bring the show to a sudden end.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV1.
