Dave Myers, the star of Hairy Bikers, has revealed that his chemotherapy treatment for cancer has impacted his ability to walk.
The TV chef disclosed last year that he had been diagnosed with the condition, joking that he will be a “baldy biker” for the time being.
In a January health update, he stated that his treatment was “ongoing” and that he was “kinda doing alright” as he learned to live with cancer.
On Friday, the 65-year-old expanded on the adverse effects of chemotherapy, claiming that it ‘doesn’t age you half as rapidly.’
‘By God, the chemotherapy doesn’t half age you soon,’ he added of the treatment. Because your equilibrium disappears, which is a nightmare for someone riding a motorbike, and my walking has been greatly impacted.’
Dave told Kaye Adams on her How To Be 60 podcast that while he had “no signs” of cancer, he had been dealing with the drug’s side effects, which had left him unable to stand.
‘So I’ve had to learn to walk again properly,’ he explained.
He also said: ‘It’s a funny thing, chemotherapy, it’s one of life’s great levelers. It doesn’t matter if you’re on the telly or on the dole, if you get that then you’re in the s***.’
The television presenter went on to say he had been suffering from depression because of the chemo.
He explained: ‘Sometimes the chemo does make you depressed.
‘It’s a type of chemical depression, and that’s really hard, because everyone is telling you to be positive, but when the chemistry in your body is not telling you that story, that’s harsh.’
Dave confirmed that he would return to filming this May ‘around chemo’, as he added he was ‘grateful’ the cancer wasn’t spreading.
Dave has previously discussed his health issues, including the discovery that he has glaucoma, an eye illness that can lead to blindness.
He said in 2018 that he initially dismissed the ailment as a severe hangover.
Si King, another Hairy Biker, has also spoken openly about suffering from a brain aneurysm in 2014, which he subsequently revealed he only survived owing to significant weight reduction.
Dave and Si became famous as the Hairy Bikers after meeting in 1995, with Dave participating on Strictly Come Dancing in 2013.
