Happy Valley is not being kind to no-nonsense officer Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) as she prepares to retire.
Instead of settling down in the final months before she retires, Catherine has been tasked with investigating the heinous gangland murder of Gary Gaggowski and waging a new war with her arch-nemesis Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton).
Despite being imprisoned, Tommy has found a method to torment Catherine from behind bars, since his son Ryan (Rhys Connah) has been giving him visits over the past year.
Ryan was taken to Sheffield by a guy and a woman who turned out to be Catherine’s sister Clare (Siobahn Finneran) and her boyfriend Neil (Con O’Neill), as revealed in episode 2.
Rather of confronting her family, Catherine decides to follow them, presumably to verify and confirm the illicit contacts with her own eyes.
Clare quietly waits in a coffee shop as Neil and Ryan enter the prison, while Catherine, who is secretly watching her, provides her an opportunity to ‘fess up during a devastating phone call.
Catherine walks into the cafe and sits opposite her surprised sister, saying simply, ‘Hiya,’ before the episode concludes, after lying about her whereabouts and cancelling the call.
However, considering that Clare was not actually in the prison, some astute fans have speculated that she is not the ‘lady’ in the jail’s visitor log accompanying Ryan and Neil.
Instead, viewers have speculated that a ‘scary’ figure from Happy Valley’s season 2 could be another accomplice.
‘Are we sure it’s not that creepy lady teacher (Frances) from Series 2 using Clare’s name that’s bringing Ryan to visit?,’ a Twitter user asked.
They are alluding to teacher Frances Drummond (Shirley Henderson), who was smitten with Tommy and eager to do his dirty job while he was imprisoned.
Many others came up with the same theory, with one remarking: ‘I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this’, while another teased: ‘Shirley Henderson’s character is missing so far.’

Several people called the teacher ‘creepy,’ suggesting she was impersonating Clare and using her identity to infiltrate Tommy’s prison.
In any case, Siobahn has hinted that episode 3 of the riveting third series would be a wild journey.
Siobhan alerted hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about what was going up next on Monday’s This Morning: ‘All I can really say about that is I think you’re gonna have to fasten your seatbelts for episode three.’
Happy Valley continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
