It’s not long till the second season of Netflix’s Heartstopper arrives, and we’ve just been treated to a trailer that has us in tears.
The first season, which was nominated for best new drama at the National Television Awards last year, saw rugby player Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) fall for Charlie Spring (Joe Locke).
Heartwarming scenes showed Nick showered with support after speaking up to his mother, played by Olivia Colman, about his sexuality as the couple negotiated their adolescent life at school and their developing romance.
Season two appears to be just as dramatic, if the trailer is any indication.
‘I have a boyfriend!’ Charlie shouts, in the trailer, as clips of their adorable romance blooming follow.
But Nick isn’t quite ready to shout it as loud, telling Charlie: ‘I want to tell people, it’s hard to find the time.’
‘I want you to come out when and how you want to,’ Charlie later reassures him as they cuddle up in bed.
He heartwarmingly adds: ‘I can make sure that Nick doesn’t have to deal with what I did, I can protect him.
‘Everything is going to be perfect.’
With season two introducing Nick’s father Stephane and brother David (played by Thibault de Montalembert and Jack Barton, respectively), we’re not sure how coming out to his family will go, and things may not turn out as Charlie wants.
Meanwhile, Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) and Tara (Corinna Brown) have difficulties in their relationship as it becomes more serious, while Elle (Yasmin Finney) and Tao (William Gao) strive to figure out whether they can be more than friends.
The synopsis for season two teases: ‘With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.’
Heartstopper season 2 launches on Netflix on August 3.
