ITV has officially disclosed when the relaunch of Jeopardy! will premiere. Stephen Fry is the host.
The Love Island broadcaster said in February that the popular show, which is still one of the most-watched gameshows on American television, will be resurrected.
While Jeopardy! has shown over 8,000 episodes in the United States since its debut in 1964, it has not aired in the United Kingdom since it appeared on Channel 4, ITV, and Sky One between 1983 and 1996.
However, ITV omitted one critical element in the announcement: the date of Jeopardy!’s return.
However, the Big Brother network has announced that the gleaming new edition of the gameshow will premiere on New Year’s Day at 5.45pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
It will then air weekdays at 4 p.m., with at least 20 episodes produced and scheduled.
In Jeopardy!, contestants are given clues in the form of answers and must respond in the form of a question.
Once in the finals, participants have the opportunity to win large cash rewards, with some winners earning millions across many Jeopardy! episodes.
Stephen, who recently recovered after falling from a stage and fracturing multiple bones, had previously vowed that the ITV revival will have a “modern twist.”
He said: ‘In the United States, Jeopardy! is a phenomenon like no other. Whenever I’m in America, I do my damnedest to catch it every weekday.’
The former Q.I. host continued, saying to viewers: ‘The idea of hosting it here in the UK makes me dizzy with delight.’
‘Such a dedicated quizzing nation as ours will, I hope, welcome this uniquely beguiling and endlessly rewarding game.’
Alex Trebek notably presented Jeopardy! for more than 35 years between 1984 and his death in 2020 at the age of 80.
Big Brother has returned to ITV, while Gladiators will return to the BBC in 2024.
Jeopardy! premieres on New Year’s Day on ITV1 and ITVX at 5.45pm.
