Maya Jama, the new host of ITV2’s Love Island 2023, has already wowed fans just a few days into the show’s premiere.
After dazzled in a vibrant green gown on her first appearance at the villa in South Africa, she stunned in a black cut-out piece while returning in the evening.
However, on Wednesday night’s broadcast, viewers were stunned when a song from the 28-year-ex-boyfriend, old’s Stormzy, played in the background.
Not only that, but the 29-year-old rapper’s song, Hide & Seek, is often assumed to be about her, despite the fact that they split in 2019.
Tanya Mahenga and Ron Hall were on dates with the two new bombshells, David Salako and Zara Deniz Lackenby-Brown, when the song in question came on.
The lyrics include: ‘Oh, girl, you’re shining. You know you’re my diamond,’ before he sings: ‘Heartbreak’s such a dark place but we stay in it.’
The choice of music astounded fans, with one tweeting: ‘Not them playing one of Stormzy’s love songs to Maya right now knowing she’s the host and watching.’
‘Stormzy made sure Maya was going hear Hide & Seek by any means necessary,’ another said, while another remarked: ‘Them playing a Stormzy song about Maya is killing me.’
One viewer dubbed ITV ‘cheeky’ for the song selection, as another stated: ‘Love Island playing Stormzy Hide & Seek within 3 episodes as soon as Maya becomes host.’
While Maya is the new Love Island host, taking over for the first time this year from Laura Whitmore, Stormzy has a history with the show.
In 2017, the rapper caused accidental drama in the villa after a tweet he sent about Chris Hughes and Olivia Attwood was displayed during a task, in which he wrote: ‘Chris, you’re too good for her pal.’
Later in the show, he dialled in for a video conference with the remaining candidates, and Olivia questioned him about his remark.
‘Oh hey, babe,’ Olivia said coolly to the rapper, as he covered his head in embarrassment.
‘Liv, no hard feelings!’ he exclaimed, before laughing.
The dates on tonight’s Love Island episode proved to be possible turning points for some of the islanders, with Ron admitting that his head was on a swivel after being captivated by newbie Zara.
If Ron decides to pursue a romance with the bombshell instead of Lana Jenkins, she may find herself in a vulnerable situation.
Tanya, on the other hand, appears to still have a strong affinity to Shaq Muhammad, having enjoyed a steamy kiss with him in bed.
Could she end up seeing where things go with David, as Shaq expresses interest in Zara following her spectacular entrance?
Love Island returns tomorrow at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
