Series two of And Just Like That… will feature the long-awaited return of Kim Cattrall’s character Samantha Jones, but bringing her back on board meant satisfying her requirements.
Kim, 66, had first stated that she would not return for the Sex and The City sequel, but a phone call from a very important someone changed her mind.
And Just Like That’s streamer HBO called her to see if there was anything they could do to get her to return to the programme as the public relations guru.
During an appearance on the American talk programme The View, the actress recounted the phone call, adding, ‘It’s quite intriguing to receive a call from the CEO of HBO saying, “What can we do?”‘
Not one to turn down an opportunity to get inventive she informed the panelists of her response: ‘And I went, “Hmmm… let me get creative”.’
Kim decided that she wanted original costume designer Patricia Field to be the one to style her scene.
‘I thought if I’m gonna come back, I gotta come back with that kind of Samantha style, I gotta push it, and we did!’
Kim originally played the sex-positive character in the ground-breaking series between 1999 and 2004. She then appeared in both sequel films, first in 2008 and 2010, but was absent from the sequel series that began in 2021.
She returned in legendary fashion, simply writing ‘Happy Pride’ beside the statement.
She shot the cameo without the presence of any of the show’s other prominent performers, including Sarah Jessica Parker [Carrie Bradshaw], Cynthia Nixon [Miranda Hobbes], or Kristin Davis [Charlotte York Goldenblatt].
Evan Handler, who plays Kirstin’s on screen husband Harry, revealed details to People: ‘Apparently, [her cameo] was shot in the garage somewhere with no contact with anybody, so the only place I have to welcome her is into my living room when it airs on television.’
He went on to say that he thinks it’s ‘wonderful’ that she’s back.
The presence is said to be confined to a phone chat with Carrie, and we’ll have to wait a few weeks to find out what they talked about.
The audience was informed in season one that New Yorker Carrie and the now-London-based Samantha had fallen out, but there was a glimpse of optimism when the two exchanged SMS on the finale.
SJP, 58, previously told Hollywood Reporter: ‘We did not ask her [Kim] to be part of this [And Just Like That…] because she made it clear that that wasn’t something she wanted to pursue, and it no longer felt comfortable for us, and so it didn’t occur to us.’
Kim, who has previously said she’s never been friends with her co-stars despite their on-screen chemistry, explained why she previously made the decision to turn down a third movie to Variety.
‘It’s a great wisdom to know when enough is enough. I also didn’t want to compromise what the show was to me. The way forward seemed clear.’
We’re delighted they were able to reach a professional arrangement despite their supposed disagreement.
