Kym Marsh is the second contestant confirmed for Strictly Come Dancing 2022

The second contestant on Strictly Come Dancing 2022 has been announced, and it’s none other than former popstar, actress, and Corrie legend Kym Marsh!

Kym is set to take to the glitzy dancefloor this year alongside actor Will Mellor, who was announced shortly before on BBC Breakfast.

She said: ‘I’ve considered doing Strictly for years but the timings never worked out.

‘I’m so delighted that this year they have! I’m a huge fan of the show and can’t believe I’m going to go from watching at home in my pyjamas to actually dancing in front of the judges in a glittery dress, it’s unreal!’

The star shot to fame as part of the pop group Hear’Say in 2001 alongside the likes of Myleene Klass.

She went on to pursue a solo career and, from 2006, starred as Michelle Connor in Coronation Street.

Kym, 46, is also set to return to soapland as she joins the revival of Waterloo Road.

The star could be in with a great chance on Strictly, as soap stars have a brilliant track record on the show.

EastEnders’ Rose Ayling-Ellis took the glitterball trophy last year, while Emmerdale’s Kelvin Fletcher landed the win in 2019.

Holby City star Joe McFadden also won in 2017, with EastEnders’ Kara Tointon winning in 2010.

She’s also known for being a Corrie icon (Picture: ITV)

Kym was announced shortly after Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps actor Will was confirmed as the first contestant on the 2022 series.

‘I’m honestly so chuffed to be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing this year! Not going to lie, it’s totally out of my comfort zone and I know it will be a huge challenge but that’s what life is all about,’ he said.

‘This is also my Mum’s favourite show and she’s had a really tough few years so I’m doing this is for her as well. Bring it on!

What we know about Strictly Come Dancing 2022 so far

Who are the judges?

Head judge Shirley Ballas will be joined once again by fellow judges Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse.

Anton Du Beke will also be returning to judge, after it was confirmed that he would be officially replacing Bruno Tonioli.

Who are the new professional dancers?

There are four new pros joining the line-up: Vito Coppola, Carlos Gu, Lauren Oakley and Michelle Tsiakkas.

Which professional dancers have left?

After the 2021 season, it was announced that fan-favourite pros Oti Mabuse and Aljaž Škorjanec would not be returning for the 2022 series.

Will there be a studio audience?

Yes – following past restrictions put in place due to the pandemic, the full studio audience is set to return this year, while the see-through dividers between the judges will also be removed.

When is the show returning?

The BBC has revealed that the launch show for the 2022 series is due to be recorded on Wednesday September 7.

Therefore, it’s likely that it will air a few days later on Saturday September 10, although the exact date of the first episode is yet to be disclosed.

This year’s series is set to see a few changes come into play, with the introduction of several new professional dancers and a tweaked – but familiar – judging panel.

Having previously stepped in as a guest judge, for the 2022 series, Anton Du Beke will officially be replacing Bruno Tonioli, with the Italian choreographer explaining how arduous the schedule was for him flying back and forth between the UK and the US to also judge for Dancing With The Stars.

This means that Anton will once again sit beside Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and head judge Shirley Ballas to deliver his expertise to the next line-up of celebrities and their pro partners.

Speaking of the professional dancers, four new faces have been cast on the show, following Oti Mabuse and Aljaž Škorjanec’s exits after seven and nine years respectively.

Strictly Come Dancing will begin on BBC One on September 7.
