Laura Whitmore, a former Love Island anchor, has said that police instructed her to ‘expect’ a terrible stalker situation she encountered eight years ago because of her line of work.
With a new ITV series investigating important challenges that women confront, the 38-year-old is returning to her investigative journalistic origins.
Laura investigates incels, hard sex, and cyber stalking, the latter of which she had a personal experience with.
Appearing on Tuesday’s BBC Breakfast, the Celebrity Juice star explained: ‘For me, this was something I really wanted to talk about, and a lot of these things, sometimes you’re too scared to.
‘I had a stalking appearance, years ago and I was almost afraid to talk about it because there’s embarrassment.’
She continued: ‘When I went to police at that time, it was a long time ago, I was told “Oh it’s kind of expected with the kind of job you have.”
‘And then you’re a bit mortified and don’t say anything else.’
Laura went on to say that her three documentaries showing the ‘darker side’ of humanity were things she felt she ‘needed’ to talk about.
She said: ‘Because if we don’t talk about these things, it won’t get better.’
Elsewhere during the BBC interview, Laura made a cheeky quip referring to her time on Love Island.
Talking about whether this was a ‘different’ side to her, she said: ‘It’s always been there.
‘I just walk a little bit faster on this show than I do on other shows.’
Laura, who is married to Love Island narrator Iain Stirling, had been remarking on the ITV2 dating show’s perplexing reactions to her “slow stroll.”
Before Maya Jama took over as host, Laura drew ridicule for her famous’slow stroll’ into the villa to deliver – more often than not – devastating news to the islanders.
The radio personality, who went on to star in the West End musical 2:22 A Ghost Story, was perplexed by the criticism about her slowed-down swagger.
‘I got a complaint because I’m so selfish, I make the whole show about me because I walk so slow,’ she told The Independent.
She added: ‘Someone actually wrote in! I walk normal pace. They slow it down!’
