Louis Walsh has doubts over Zayn Malik after nervous audition in unseen X Factor footage: ‘It’s like you’re unsure of yourself’

A new clip of unseen X Factor footage has been released, revealing the moment One Direction star Zayn Malik took to the stage to sing for Louis Walsh, Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell for the very first time.

While fans are aware of how successful the singer, now 29, has been since his days competing on the ITV series, it appears his journey kicked off with a shaky start, with Louis expressing doubts over the then-17-year-old’s ‘stage presence’.

In his first audition, Zayn performed Mario’s Let Me Love You, performing on his own before One Direction was later formed by the judges to also include Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.

When asked by Simon why he decided to take part in the competition, he replied meekly: ‘I don’t know – it’s always been something I’ve wanted to do since I was younger, and I just thought I’d give it a shot and see how far I can get.’

During his performance, Zayn paced from foot to foot, garnering some cheers from the audience as they expressed their support for the then-unknown musician.

Nicole didn’t give much away, watching the auditionee with little expression on her face before Simon raised his hand to signal an end to the song.

Louis was the first to share his thoughts on Zayn’s talent, telling him: ‘Um, Zayn, you’ve got a good voice, for somebody that hasn’t had a lot of experience.

‘Your voice is definitely there. I don’t know if you’ve got the stage presence yet. It’s like you’re unsure of yourself. But I think there’s something here.’

Nicole revealed that she agreed with Louis, before praising Zayn on his ‘natural talent’.

‘Louis, I agree with you. I think that there’s something there, and I actually think you have a very natural talent. There’s something about you and I really like your voice,’ she said.

Simon refrained from sharing his own views, turning to Louis to ask if he wanted to send Zayn through to the next stage of the competition.

Louis appeared to hesitate at first, but eventually said ‘yes’, with Nicole then saying: ‘You’re only 17, you have so much more to grow. Yes.’

Simon was the final one out of the trio to also send yes, giving Zayn another shot to sing again.

As we now know, the rest is history.
