Martin Compston has spoken up about the terrible moment in The Rig when his character Fulmer was set on fire.
The latest blockbuster drama from Amazon Prime follows a gang of oil workers digging for the fossil fuel in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland.
However, as they prepare to return home, a weird fog shrouds the rig, cutting off all communication and basically leaving the party stranded.
As the weather continues to deteriorate, the crew scrambles to figure out what is causing this unknown force – but not before it kills several of them.
The 38-year-old Line of Duty star is joined by Emily Hampshire from Schitt’s Creek, Iain Glen from Game of Thrones, and Rochenda Sandall from Small Axe.
The Mayflies actor plays communications officer Fulmer Hamilton, one of the crew members afflicted by the fog, which has bionic capabilities and can be dangerous at times.
When the rig’s flare, which is required to alert rescue personnel of their presence, goes out of commission due to the illness, Fulmer valiantly offers to relight it with a flare gun.
Fulmer decides to unclip his harness to get closer to the burnt-out flame, despite Rose’s (Hampshire’s) protests, and fires a shot, but the recoil sets him on fire.
Doctor Cat (Sandall) rushes to aid him, his back on fire and unconscious, and heals him for burns that miraculously heal onboard the rig.
Martin claimed that he was set on fire for the horrifying scenario under the supervision of a safety crew.
He explained: ‘It was one of the more interesting days of work. It got a wee bit toasty and everybody can ran in.
‘Things can go wrong, but you’re in a safe environment, and you’ve got a lot of professionals around you.
‘I love all that stuff [stunts] and I know it sounds daft, but I really do enjoy it. Getting set on fire is one of the more interesting days of work.’
The Rig is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
