Maya Jama was left holding her pearls after Joel Dommett made an obnoxious remark about Sir Elton John at yesterday night’s Brit Awards.
During the live awards event, which broadcast on ITV1 on Saturday, Mo Gilligan went the rounds, mingling with famous guests, and stopped at a particularly star-studded table, which saw Maya, Joel, AJ Odudu, and Keith Lemon rubbing shoulders with each other.
Discussing his fashion choice, Joel said: ‘I love wearing the mad suits here as well, it’s a proper party. It continues the party.’
Looking down at his black blazer with white lapels, the comedian, 37, joked: ‘Tonight I feel like a piano, I’m ready to be fingered by Elton John.’
Maya, 28, was left reeling by Joel’s NSFW humour at this point, and her smile quickly transformed to a startled frown.
Viewers reacted differently to the joke, with some laughing out loud and others dismissing it as inappropriate for a live broadcast.
One laughed: ‘Just Joel Dommett creating tv moment of the year,’ while another tweeted: ‘Time froze when joel dommett said he’s ‘ready to be fingered by elton john’ on live TV.’
Also reacting to the moment, one viewer said: ‘Oh my life, completely unnecessary Elton John related filth from Joel Dommett there, people’s careers have been finished for less.’
Another weighed in: ‘Just when I thought the #Brits2023 had hit absolute rock bottom, Joel Dommett said he is waiting for Elton John to finger him cos of his piano jacket…. You couldn’t make this stuff up.’
There were lots of embarrassing moments during this year’s Brit Awards, with host Mo becoming viral on social media after unintentionally presenting Lewis Capaldi as ‘Sam Capaldi’. Tom Grennan has also been chastised for making a remark about Ellie Goulding’s breasts while onstage presenting an award to her.
Viewers also groaned when Kid Harpoon, actual name Thomas Hull, made a cringe-worthy joke about Maya and her ex-boyfriend Stormzy.
While accepting Harry’s award for album of the year for Harry’s House, Hull said: ‘Thanks so much for honouring us tonight. Tyle[r Johnson], Harry, thank you so much I love you like brothers. Couldn’t ask for anyone better to do this with, we got this forever.
‘Also, my wife Jenny, has promised me we are going to pretend to be Maya and Stormzy back in the day tonight. Turn off the lights,’ before the sound was cut.
On a brighter note, the night also honoured the best in music over the past year, with Harry winning four awards and newbies Wet Leg winning best new artist.
Becky Hill was crowned best dance act while Beyonce scooped two gongs for international artist and international song of the year with Break My Soul.
The Brit Awards 2023 is available to watch on ITVX.
