Mrs Brown’s Boys will return to television screens later this year, with a miniseries airing for the first time in a decade.
Brendan O’Carroll stars as matriarch Agnes Brown in the long-running BBC series, which is most known for its renowned Christmas specials, which air each December.
The last Mrs Brown’s Boys series aired in 2013, so it’s been ten years since viewers were treated to one.
Brendan, 67, has scheduled a brief run later this year, with sequences for the four episodes filming in the spring.
‘This mini-series was really intended for 2021,’ the comedian added in a statement. After been prevented twice, first by Covid-19 and then by a post-Covid studio scarcity, it’s amazing to finally have the chance to make it happen.’
‘Fasten your seatbelts and hold on to your hats!’ he cautioned.
‘There’s no one quite like Mrs Brown,’ remark Josh Cole, head of comedy at BBC Studios, and Steven Canny, executive producer, of the show’s return. An unstoppable force of outrageous humour and comedy that keeps audiences engaged and belly-achingly funny. It’s wonderful to be back.’
Jon Petrie, director of comedy, added: ‘BBC Comedy are pleased to announce that after a decade since the last full series of Mrs Brown’s Boys, millions of viewers around the UK will be thrilled to hear that Brendan is bringing Agnes and the family back together for a brand-new mini-series of his award-winning show.’
Nevertheless, not everyone will be happy to see the long-running sitcom return, as many fans demanded that it be cancelled following a ‘painful’ New Year’s special in 2022.
The episode, named Mammy’s Hair Loom, was one of four that aired, and it featured the once-loved fictitious figure navigating life in Finglas for the second time in a few days.
What do you think of the Mrs Brown’s Boys news?
Now is the time to comment.
One viewer commented on the show, saying, ‘I don’t understand why people like #mrsbrownsboys it’s not humorous. Unless it’s Rupal’s Drag Race, there’s nothing humorous about a guy in a dress. Please explain why our licence price is being wasted on crap like Mrs. BB [sic]’.
‘A five-year-old could create a better script than this,’ said another. How on earth is this recommissioned year after year? ‘MrsBrownsBoys [sic]’.
‘Not even 24 hours into 2023, and Mrs Brown’s Boys is on on TV!!!’ This year has been wrecked! ‘Thank you very much, BBC [sic],’ one viewer bemoaned.
However, not all responses were harsh, with some viewers appreciating the performance for its comic attempts.
All 43 previous episodes of Mrs Brown’s Boys are available to enjoy on BBC iPlayer while viewers await the new mini-series.
